What's In For Spring: 10 Trends for Spring 2011 - Women Campus

The seasons come and go, but unless you read every page of the fashion magazines, it can be hard to keep up with all of the latest trends. For this spring, there’s no reason not to be the best dressed girl on campus. Her Campus spoke with North Carolina-based fashion stylist, Wendy Bryant Gow, about the 10 must-have fashion trends, colors, and accents for this spring. It’s like your very own shopping list!

Orange:

Even if it’s not your favorite color, let’s be honest: orange makes us think of summer. It has a way of reminding us of, well, oranges. We think of citrus groves in Florida, sunny, warm days, or better yet, Creamsicles. If you’re not big on the intense citrusy color, there are still ways to add it to your outfit. Try livening up your ensemble with a bright orange belt or a pair of sandals. “Orange is perfect for accent pieces,” Wendy said. “Use it for a splash of color, and just a hint of orange.” Spend: Tory Burch Jelly Sandal - $130 Save: Lucky Orange Sandal - $9.99

Python:

Ever seen the movie Anaconda? For this trend, wear snakeskin inspired fabrics everywhere (but not all at once!). “Use python as a key element in accessories,” Wendy said. Try a python-looking handbag, belt, or pair of awesome snakeskin heels. Spend: Carlos by Carlos Santana Snake Print Platform - $89 Save: Chinese Laundry Kasha Snakeskin Pump - $49

Shine:

Sparkles are quite possibly a girl’s best friend in the fashion world. Try this trend with sequins, metallics, or beaded appliqués as accents on everything from tank tops to dresses, but always in moderation. This year, Wendy said mixed media are the perfect way to switch up your wardrobe and integrate shimmers into your daywear. “Try, for example, a python fabric with added metallics or shimmers,” Wendy said. Spend: Victoria’s Secret Sequin One-Shoulder Top - $78.50 Save: Asos Sequin Miniskirt - $34.32

Putty:

No, not Silly Putty. For this color, think of clay. Go for soft, warm, muted grays, or khakis. These are very neutral colors and can be paired with anything. Putty is also the new It color for nails [Fashion Rules] this spring. “Putty is perfect as a base layer,” Wendy said. “Everything from skirts to dresses (all your basic pieces) are perfect in putty this spring.” Spend: Ella Moss Dress - $90 Save: New York and Company Long Rib Tank Top - $19.95

Trench coats:

Trench coats are a wardrobe staple. You’ll be wearing them long after Spring 2010 is over. They come in almost any color these days, but the classic khaki, off-white, or black trench is bound to always be in style. Another option for outerwear this spring, Wendy said: leather jackets in blacks and browns. Spend: Mango Belted Trench Coat - $145.13 Save: Gap Mid-length Trench Coat - $88

Camp:

Go western casual, in these shirts and dresses. Wendy said the camp style means “short sleeves, rolled, and held up with a tab and button.” These can be worn in either solid colors, or prints. Spend: Lucky Brand Tyler Yarn Dye Check Camp Shirt - $69.50 Save: New York and Company The Eastside Shirt Dress - $29.95

Ruffles:

Ruffles can be a super cute way to add a light-hearted feel to an outfit. Be careful not to overdo it though! For the best look, stick to one or two ruffled pieces: try a ruffled blouse with a pencil skirt. Beware: too big, or too many ruffles can look overwhelming. “Ruffles are the perfect way to add a blouse with something a little different to your closet,” Wendy said. Spend: Banana Republic Petite Ruffle-Neck Tank - $45 Save: Forever21 Ruffle Trim Ribbed Tank - $15.80

Safari and Jungle:

Go wild in animal-inspired prints. Everything from zebra to leopard is in this spring. Don’t be afraid to try animal prints in bold colors. Never seen a leopard with purple and blue spots? Doesn’t mean it won’t make for a cute beach dress! “This trend is coming up everywhere in prints and fabrics this season,” Wendy said. Spend: BCBGMaxazria Croco Print_Dress - $148 Save: Victoria’s Secret Off The Shoulder Tee Dress - $29

Floral:

What better way to get in the spring spirit than with shirts and dresses covered in gorgeous blossoms? Floral prints are strong this season. Try a flirty top in a light, breezy fabric, or cover yourself in colorful blooms with a sweet summer dress. “Bold florals are popping up everywhere across the board this spring” Wendy said. Translation? Try floral prints on everything from shoes to tank tops! Spend: Urban Outfitters Urban Renewal Blossom Pencil Dress - $48 Save: Arden B. Floral Print_Bow_Back_Tunic - $39

Fabulous White Blouse:

White is always a go-to color for spring. It’s fresh, crisp, and bright; just the way we want our spring days. This season, find yourself the perfect white blouse. It can be paired with anything from skirts, to skinny jeans. Go sweet and feminine with an eyelet or lacy top. For a more classic look, try the simple white button-down. “Every woman should have a classic white blouse in her closet,” Wendy said. “Try incorporating some of the other trends with this one: the ruffles or camp sleeve are good options to add a little something extra.” Spend: Free People Bohemian Rapsody Top - $108 Save: ArdenB Embroidered Boat Neck Tunic - $39 Sources Wendy Bryant Gow, North Carolina-based fashion stylist
