What Girls Are Wearing at Colleges Across the Country
I have a confession: I had no idea that leg warmers were back and I still can't figure out how to pull off the hippie headband. We all try our best to be savvy girls up to date on the latest trends but let's face it, even with a little help from your subscription to Vogue, college campuses can easily become fashion bubbles. After all, if you go to UCLA, winter boot trends are as useful to you as the flip-flops sitting in the back of my Midwestern closet. To keep you in the know this semester, Her Campus has investigated the most popular fashion trends—from Tory Burch flats to trapper hats—on college campuses around the country.
Syracuse University- Sorel Boots
At last count, Syracuse, New York had gotten 132.4 inches of snowfall this winter. Which is why it comes as no surprise that this season, the celebrity-touted Sorel Boots are in on campus. A favorite of Kate Hudson, these sturdy, cozy boots are the obsession of Syracuse women. Sorel Boots come in a variety of styles and colors but all pairs are made to handle the harshest of winter weather. A perfect mix of function and fashion, HC Contributing Writer and Syracuse student Heather Rinder thinks that Sorel may be picking up exactly where Uggs left off—just order down a size since these boots seem to run extra large.
Elon University- Jack Rodgers Sandals
A classic favorite of Jackie Kennedy, Jack Rodgers Sandals have been an "in" item for decades. Known for their popularity in the Hamptons, these sandals are the perfect way to add a little summer to your look. Most of the sandals match nude soles with metallic leather for timeless glamour with an edge. Plus, metallic is a huge trend for spring so it seems the Elon girls have hit the nail on the head with this trend.
Purchase College- Leg Warmers
I was so excited to hear that leg warmers were back. As a huge fan of Dirty Dancing and updated '80s style, this is one trend I can't wait to try. Christie Rotondo, HC Campus Correspondent at Purchase College says, "I have really noticed a lot of girls wearing knit leg warmers with boots and tights this semester. It's a great way to keep warm while still wearing a cute dress or skirt." Urban Outfitters has a great selection of leg warmers, as does Free People.
Franklin Pierce University- Neutral Knits
Cuffed jeans, pink polos and Tory Burch flats have been iconic staples since the beginning of preppy. Known for their classic Southern style, Vanderbilt ladies are always looking to add a little polish, which is exactly why Tory Burch flats are a perfect fit. For class, throw on leggings and a white tee with your T.B. flats to look both chic and laidback. Vandy freshman Kristina says, " You'll always see girls on campus going to class and going out in their Tory Burch flats. They dress up any outfit."
Washington University in St. Louis- Trapper Hats
The sexy lumberjack look is certainly in at Wash U this semester. To help keep warm in the Midwestern blizzards, girls on campus have turned to the trapper hat trend. A favorite of mine, trapper hats make the common woe of unattractive winter gear a thing of the past. To really embrace the look, try pairing a faux fur trapper hat with jeans and a plaid shirt. Wash U junior Ariel said, "My trapper hat was the first purchase I made when I went home over winter break- it looks so much more fashionable than my old beanie. I had never considered buying one until I started seeing them everywhere on campus, now I love mine!"
Colorado State University- TOMS
TOMS shoes
UCLA- Gladiator Sandals
Huge this fall, it seems gladiators are still all the rage at UCLA. With beautiful weather year-round, gladiators are a way for UCLA girls to edge up beach wear. Sophomore Lisa M. says, "I wear the jean shorts white tee look a lot which can get a little boring. Girls wear gladiators to make causal outfits more fun." If tall gladiators are too intense for your style, K. Jacques Gina Flat sandals are a great way to rock the trend toned down.
University of Michigan- Winter White (and nude)
Although black is always in style, winter color palettes can get pretty drab. To keep things bright this season, University of Michigan ladies are investing in some winter white coats. If you're looking for a timeless investment, try Moncler's white and nude parkas. To sport the look for less, try Club Monaco for off-white pea coats.
