HC's Guide to Sunglasses: The Best Sunglasses For Your Face Shape - Women Campus

It’s almost summer, which means beach trips, pool time, and backyard BBQs so of course you’ll need the perfect sunglasses. However, getting that “perfect” pair isn’t as easy as you’d hope. Ever tried on your friend’s glamorous, oversized, Posh-inspired sunglasses only to look and feel like a bug? When choosing your sunnies it’s all about your face shape.

Check out Lenscrafters.com to find the best kind of glasses for you. On the site you can look up your face shape (or upload a picture and the site will determine your face shape) and it will recommend different types of frames for you!

Randy Barnett, president of Indivijual Custom Eyewear explains, “generally, the frame shape should contrast with the face shape.” Here are sunglasses that will suit each face shape. There are four different face shapes: Heart, Round, Square and Oval.

Heart:

If you have a heart-shaped face (small chin, top of your face is wider) you should opt for a butterfly style or cat-eye style.

From Sunglasswarehouse.com for $13.56

Or Marc by Marc Jacobs “Retro Cat’s Eye” sunglasses from Bloomingdales.com, $85.00

Round:

Round faces have soft curves and only a few angles, so it is best to pick out an angular frame. If you have a round face, pick out rectangular styles.

SW Zebra Print from sunglasswarehouse.com, $13.56

Or “Gucci Rectangle Sunglasses with Open Logo Detail” at nordstrom.com, $245.00

Barnett suggests that women with round faces select a deep color, like black or tortoise to minimize the fullness of their faces.

Square:

Just like with the round frames, you want to pick frames that have the opposite features of your face. Round frames can create curves on a square face. You can also experiment with rimless frames.

“SW Rhinestone” from Sunglasswarehouse.com, $11.01

Or something like the “4159” from Chanel, $349

Barnett notes that people with square faces should ensure that “the top of the frame should sit high enough on the face to downplay the jaw line.”

Oval:

With an oval face you can wear just about any frame! Just avoid oversized sunglasses (so you don’t look like a bug!) because oval faces tend to have smaller features.

“SW Retro” from sunglasswarehouse.com, $10.16

Or something like these Louis Vuitton “Obsession PM” sunglasses, $560.00.

If you’re looking to find sunglasses that are a little bit trendier this season, opt for ones with detailing. DVF, Chanel and Louis Vuitton (as well as many others!) have introduced sunglasses with intricate detailing, creating an edgy yet feminine look.

Try Diane Von Furstenberg, “DVF502S Sunglasses in Black” for $145.00
