Wrap It Up: This Year's Hottest Scarf Styles and How to Wear Them - Women Campus

When I first moved to New York City after spending eight years in Florida, the winter scarf was my nemesis. In the fall I would happily purchase countless numbers of scarves in all styles and prints but when winter rolled around they would sit in my closet because I was unsure about the proper way to wear them. If you are anything like I was and finding a cute scarf is only the start of your worries, don’t fear—Her Campus has investigated this season’s popular scarf styles—Snoods, Neck Warmers, Cashmere Scarves, Tubular Scarves and Knit Scarves—to show you the trends, the best choices to keep warm and the best way to style each.

Snood

The days of the simple knit scarf are behind us. Finding a scarf is now a test of vocabulary as well as style. Walking around Bergdorf Goodman last fall, a salesperson approached me and said, “you should check out the new Snoods we got in for fall.” I had no idea what a Snood was and had only heard the word in reference to the online puzzle game, big in 2001. A Snood, the salesperson informed me, is a circular scarf with extra fabric that can be worn as a scarf and a hood at once.
After purchasing my first Snood, it became one of my permanent winter staples. Big for this season, this style is very useful because it keeps everything from your neck to your ears covered and warm. To wear a Snood you place your head in the center of the fabric, wrap the excess fabric around your neck and lift the fabric in the back over your head. The trend is to buy a Snood in dark solid tones or patterned gray. Without lifting the back fabric, a Snood just looks like a chic oversized scarf but when it gets cold it can instantly be converted, making it a fashionable and economically savvy buy. Since the Snood’s comfy look makes any outfit a little boho, try pairing it with a tight sweater, leggings and boots to make your outfit more polished.

Neck Warmers and Tubular Scarves
Like the Snood, Neck Warmers and Tubular Scarves are two other popular circular styles this season. These styles make the classic scarf easier. Instead of figuring out the best way to tie, wrap or loop a traditional scarf, simply place one of these over your head and go to class! This season, designers are pairing jewel-toned, Fair Isle and plaid neck warmers and Tubular scarves with oversized knit sweaters and hooded coats for a cozy and effortless look. When shopping this style, keep in mind that taller neck warmers keep you incredibly toasty but short ones are only useful in the fall. My advice, when shopping for a neck warmer, think Blair Waldorf and choose a style that will give the effect of a uniquely shaped collar.

Knit and Cashmere Scarves
Knit and cashmere scarves will never go out of style. Despite the ease of other looks, these classic pieces give you more options than anything else. Color-wise, winter white and forest green cashmere scarves and bright-toned and Houndstooth print knit scarves are the most popular trends for this winter. However, with so many amazing styles, selecting your favorite look is far from the tricky part…what’s the best way to tie a scarf to stay warm, wear with a sweater or wear to get dressed up? We found out.

ZiaModa.com offers simple instructions on the best ways to tie scarves for every occasion:

To stay the warmest:

  1. Hang a long scarf around your neck
  2. Pull one side of the scarf to be considerably longer than the other
  3. Wrap the longer end around your neck a few times until both ends of the scarf are facing front
  4. Tie the two ends together in a knot

The simple way to wear with a sweater:

  1. Place the scarf around your neck so the two ends fall evenly in the front
  2. Take one end and cross it over your opposite shoulder so you have one end hanging in the back and one hanging in the front

To wear with a dress (or when you’re getting dressed up):
  1. Fold your scarf lengthwise to the thickness you want
  2. Place the scarf around your neck so the two ends fall evenly in the front
  3. Take the two ends and tie them together in a knot
  4. Move the knot to the side of your neck
