Fall Beauty Tips from Celebrity Hairstylist / Beauty Expert Hasblady Guzman - Women Campus
Hasblady Guzman is a hairdresser and makeup artist based in California who has worked with celebrities including Paris Hilton, Gerard Butler, and Penny Marshall among others. She has done makeup for NY Fashion Week, LA Fashion Week, and worked with stars from Ugly Betty and High School Musical. She has been a judge on Split Ends: The Final Cut and is currently working on her own pilot for a TV show. Hasblady is also working on her own product line of hair, skin, makeup, and body products to launch in 2010, which will be organic and packaged in biodegradable and recyclable containers. Today, she shares her fall fashion tips with Her Campus so that college girls can look as beautiful as the celebrities this season! Hasblady’s Fall Beauty Tips:
- Get a Gorgeous Glow: “You shouldn’t let your body get too pale and so I recommend professional airbrushing every six weeks to keep your body glowing,” Hasblady explains, especially for West Coast girls. For those afraid of spray tanning, Hasblady recommends: “Clarins self tanner. Anything but the sun basically for me.” For those of us in freezing climates, tanning doesn’t need to be as regular since we’re probably showing off less of our bodies, but Hasblady advises avoiding being completely pale in the winter—unless you can really pull it off (see tip 5!).
- A Killer Smile to Leave Them Wanting More: “For teeth, I’m loving the Crest Whitestrips because you can run around with them on.” If you wear them for just five days, your teeth will be white for a special event like a formal! For an added bonus, try blue-based lipsticks because “they make your teeth look whiter,” Hasblady explains. A great smile isn’t worth much if you don’t have the teeth to back it up!
- Naturally Alert and Fresh: “Try not to drink so much coffee because it’s bad for your skin,” explains Hasblady. For an alternative hot beverage for those brutal cold morning walks to class, Hasblady recommends green tea. While it can be difficult for us college girls to restrict our caffeine intake, if we prioritize sleeping over Facebook, we can look much more rested and gorgeous! Hasblady also reminds us of the age-old advice to get lots of sleep and drink lots of water to stay looking fabulous! While this may be the easiest advice Hasblady gives us, it’s also some of the hardest for college girls because we have so much work to do and we’re always looking for some liquid energy. But the extra sleep and water (instead of coffee!) will pay off! Just try it!
- Instant (and Easy!) Hair Makeovers: For great long hair that will last all through class, before you go sleep, “blow dry it (making sure you get all the water out of your roots and scalp) and then braid it, and sleep in the braids. When you wake up take out the braids and your hair will be in really beautiful mermaid-y kinds of waves.” You can also put your hair in two pinned Princess Leia donut-buns on the side of your hair before bed (but make sure you are comfortable while you sleep!). Spray your braided or bun-ed hair with a little hairspray in the morning before you take it down and give it about five minutes of heat from your blow dryer. Then do everything you need to get ready (brush teeth, get dressed, you know the drill) and right before you leave, take down your hair, and finish it off with a pomade—just a touch, nothing too heavy. That should last you through the day. For these and other daily hairstyles, Hasblady recommends washing hair and drying hair at night and then sleeping with a bandana or headband around your hair. This will save time in the morning because you won’t need to wash and dry your hair. Plus, Hasblady explains, hair looks better if you sleep with a bandana rather than blow-dry it in the morning. “Unless you’re sweating like a pig when you sleep it’s not going to get dirty. Hair can stay clean for up to five days!” Hasblady says. “85-90% of us do not need to wash our hair every day,” unless you are working out and sweating a lot or doing other activities that make your hair dirty.
- Old Hollywood on the East Coast: Hasblady alerts Her Campus girls to the new East Coast trend of “very alabaster skin, bright red lips, no eyeliner, lots of mascara, lots of lash, and an iridescent white opalescent shadow for the lids. No blush. Its very old Coco Chanel—the pearls, the lips, the hair is set like very Lauren Bacall. That Jessica Rabbit look is back.” Think glamour!
- Mad for Matte: “There is a matte nail polish by OPI that I am in love with right now called “You Don’t Know Jacques” and it’s nine dollars.” Experimenting will nail polish is the easiest way to try out new beauty trends, so if you aren’t ready for the Old Hollywood look yet definitely give this color a try!
