What's In At New York Fashion Week 2011 - Part 1 - Women Campus
Enjoy these looks fresh from the runway for fall! You can get some of the hottest New York Fashion Week runway looks for less right now, and with so many trends carrying over from spring to fall, shopping will be a breeze. Take a look at these styles for under $100 compiled with the help of Colin T. McDonald, celebrity/fashion stylist and commentator and four other fabulous stylists share their fashion tips.
For a briefing of what's in for fall, Noelle Cellini, owner and personal stylist of My Best Foot Forward, says, "A piece in faux fur is a must-have and easy to find at any price point and available with anything – boots, a collar, a hat, on a jacket and so on. Color blocking will also carry over, and it's nice to see color back – like cobalt and green.
"Again, it will be all about accessories – shoes, the bag, bracelets, but the statement necklace seems to be on its way out."
Other trends that are here to stay include maxi dresses, military style, lace tops and leather. Overall, New York Fashion Week had a vintage feel for the '70s.
'70s Throwback: Color, patterns and prints
Marc by Marc Jacobs, NYFW Fall RTW Collection 2011
ASOS Pleated Skirt Color Block Dress, $62.76
Free People Silk Burnout Dress, $99.95
Taking note of the rich colors that ran the runway, Wemi Opakunle, designer, stylist and wardrobe consultant, says cobalt blue and emerald green made their mark, along with marigold and burnt orange. So while black may have dominated the runway in many collections, bursts of vibrant colors couldn't be missed. McDonald says, "Rich and bold color patterns showed up a lot and are great in adding a bit of flair to any look. Marc displayed this beautifully in his Marc by Marc Jacobs collection."
For more bold '70s-style fashion, find a floppy hat. For more formal occasions, a fabulous mini dress with velvet detailing is so chic, so '70s. And with prints playing a big part in '70s fashion, Opakunle gives a great style tip: "Always balance out your prints with an item in a solid color."
Chic Sheen
Alice + Olivia, NYFW Fall RTW Collection 2011
Chico's Sporty Sheen Claira Jacket, $59.99
Urban Outfitters BDG Cigarette Jean, $54
This look from Alice + Olivia is posh punk and shows the attention fashion designer Stacey Bendet gave to pants and knits in her collection. In lots of fashion lines, glitz and glam go to new heights. McDonald says, "Many designers incorporated a bit of shimmer and shine into their collections this season. These cigarette-style pants designed by Alice + Olivia are a great example of this trend."
Not everyone can pull off wearing shiny pants like the ones from Alice + Olivia, so a sateen top or metallic jacket might be what to shop for instead. Still loving the looks of those '70s-style pants, but not the shine? Urban Outfitters has a wide selection of cigarette-style jeans and pants to choose from in a variety of rises, washes and colors. There's something for everyone to love!
